Implanon is ideal for use in the following women
- Women requesting a contraceptive method which does not require daily motivation
- Women who may be considering sterilisation but feel this is too final
- Women wishing to space their pregnancies
- Women who have problems complying with daily pill-taking regimes
- Post-partum, including lactating women; after delivery 21-28 days (if inserted after 28 days additional precautions necessary for next 7 days); abortion in first trimester, one implant inserted immediately.
- In adolescents; no contraindication to use. (NICE, October 2005). Assessment of Fraser competence needed in under 16s.
Contraindications to Implanon
- Active venous thromboembolism disorder
- Progestogen dependent tumour
- Presence or history of severe hepatic disease as long as liver function value has not returned to normal
- Known or suspected pregnancy
- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Hypersensitivity to any known component of Impanon
- Women on long-term treatment with hepatic enzyme-inducing drugs
