Implanon is ideal for use in the following women

  • Women requesting a contraceptive method which does not require daily motivation
  • Women who may be considering sterilisation but feel this is too final
  • Women wishing to space their pregnancies
  • Women who have problems complying with daily pill-taking regimes
  • Post-partum, including lactating women; after delivery 21-28 days (if inserted after 28 days additional precautions necessary for next 7 days); abortion in first trimester, one implant inserted immediately.
  • In adolescents; no contraindication to use. (NICE, October 2005). Assessment of Fraser competence needed in under 16s.

Contraindications to Implanon

  • Active venous thromboembolism disorder
  • Progestogen dependent tumour
  • Presence or history of severe hepatic disease as long as liver function value has not returned to normal
  • Known or suspected pregnancy
  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • Hypersensitivity to any known component of Impanon
  • Women on long-term treatment with hepatic enzyme-inducing drugs
