COC Contraindications

The combined contraceptive pill is suitable for sexually active menstruating women of aged up to 50 years in non smokers and aged upto 35 years in non smokers, who are at risk of unwanted pregnancy benefits of the combined oral contraceptive pill outweight the risks (FFPRHC Guidance July 2006).

  • Hormone dependent concerns (oestrogen dependent medical conditions e.g. breast cancer)
  • Diabetes: with complications/long term (WHO 4)
  • Diabetes (type ½) with no vascular disease (WHO 2)
  • Family history of arterial disease
